How to Add an Alternative Barcode to a Product

Written by ShipTop

Alternative barcodes allow multiple barcodes to be connected to the same SKU. When any of the saved barcodes is scanned during receiving, picking, or packing, the ShipTop system recognizes the associated product.

This is useful when the same physical product has different manufacturer, supplier, marketplace, internal, or case-pack barcodes.

Common Uses for Alternative Barcodes

Alternative barcodes may be used for:

  • Different supplier barcodes for the same product

  • Amazon or other marketplace identifiers (eg. Amazon FNSKU)

  • Internal warehouse barcodes

  • Updated packaging with a new barcode

  • Case or carton barcodes representing multiple units

Adding an Alternative Barcode

  1. Sign in to your Client Portal.

  2. Navigate to Inventory > Products and open the product to which you want to add the barcode.

  3. Scroll to the Product Case Barcodes section.

  4. Select Add a product Case.

  5. Enter the alternative barcode in the Case Barcode field.

  6. Enter the applicable quantity in the Case Quantity field:

    • Enter 1 when the barcode represents one unit of the product.

    • Enter the total number of units when the barcode represents a case or carton.

Important Considerations

  • An alternative barcode must be unique and should not be assigned to another SKU.

  • Confirm the barcode and case quantity carefully before saving.

  • Use a case quantity of 1 unless the barcode represents a package containing multiple units.

  • Alternative barcodes apply across all ShipTop warehouse locations.

  • A product may have multiple alternative barcodes.

  • Adding an alternative barcode does not create a new SKU or separate inventory record.
