How to Reserve Inventory

Learn how to reserve inventory in the Client Portal to control available stock and allocate units for specific use cases.

Written by ShipTop

Reserving inventory allows you to hold back a portion of your stock from being made available to your sales channels. This is useful when you want to set aside inventory for specific purposes such as wholesale orders, product launches, or returns.

When inventory is reserved, it reduces the quantity available to sell online, while still remaining physically in your warehouse.

How Reserved Inventory Works

  • Reserved units are deducted from the quantity available to your sales channels

  • Your total inventory (on-hand) remains unchanged

  • Reserved inventory is still physically stored in the warehouse

For example:
If you have 100 units in stock and reserve 20 units, only 80 units will be available for sale online (eg. your available Shopify inventory).

Step 1: Navigate to the Product

  1. Log in to your Client Portal

  2. Go to Inventory β†’ Products

  3. Search for and select the product you want to update

  4. Open the Product Details page

  5. Click the Edit (pencil icon)

  6. Locate the Reserved Quantity field

  7. Enter the number of units you want to reserve

  8. Click Update

Important Notes

  • Reserved inventory does not prevent warehouse picking

  • Reserved quantities only affect what is shown as available to sales channels

  • Manual orders may still use reserved inventory
